Bio


Richard Joseph was born in Chicago and grew up in the city and suburbs. He received a BA degree in philosophy from Dartmouth College and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Upon graduation he was awarded the Edward L. Ryerson Foreign Traveling Fellowship, and spent a year in Italy painting and studying Italian art.

After returning to the US, he lived and worked in Los Angeles for 20 years before moving to Brooklyn and then lastly to Vermont. He now lives and works in Winooski, Vermont.

Joseph has had solo shows at the Dell Gallery, Chicago; Warren Benedek Gallery, New York; OK Harris, New York; San Jose State University, California; and Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. He has participated in group shows at the Whitney Museum, Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Paris; The Milwaukee Art Center, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Holland; the Santa Barbara Museum, The Smithsonian Institution, The Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, LA Louver Gallery, Venice, California; and many others.

His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the James A. Michener Collection at the Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas, and in many private collections.
